Working with the language of the sacred through a cermonial altar

The language of the soul comes to us through poetry, images, music, once upon a time stories, and dreams. We want to hear the soul’s calling and allow our lives to be informed from this deeper language. This is a place, not of the ordinary - but of the sacred. The process of ritual nd ceremony provides a way for us to listen and work at this elegant level of the sacred. This month’s featured ceremony inspires us to work at the sacred through the creation of an altar.

As you walk your Medicine Path, altars are an incredible way to sacredly embody our soul’s journey. Many times, before we can shift our lives, we must come to closure with old patterns, beliefs, pain, or situations. An altar creates the space for this closure and also allows us to call in what we want in our lives instead. Like a fire ceremony or despacho, the altar allows us to honor what needs to be acknowledged and to receive the lessons and gifts. We give closure to the elements we want to release.

Making an altar is simple and easy with few rules or steps. The key is in the intention and the prayers you bring to the process. Your intention and personal creativity is what you use to build the altar.

You can create a personal altar to hold your becoming, or an altar for specific changes you are making in your life. Altars can be simple. You can build one using items from nature such as stones, flowers, pinecones or shells, or by utilizing any items that are sacred to you. The key element is to set your intention and keep the altar full of life. As you inform the items with your intention and prayers the altar becomes alive and needs tending or the energy can become stagnant. If you build a personal altar, move sacred items in and out as you shift and change – this allows the altar to hold and nourish you. Your intention is to bring honoring and gratitude to your life for the lessons you are learning and gifts you are receiving.

I have had clients build altars to honor their journey, as horrible or tragic as their journey may seem. The altar allows them a place of acknowledging and holding their journey as observer without being caught in the emotion or pain. They can then receive the gifts and lessons and move forward with their lives.

Creating an altar will allow you to honor and truly release the old story; to become available to create a new destiny. So, step in now! Look at the area(s) you would like to change in your life – relationships, work, family patterns, and create your altar. You may choose to identify what you would like to “call into” your life and create an altar to bring forward that destiny at the level of the sacred.

Find a special place in your home, apartment or yard. The key is to set your intention and surrender to spirit, allowing yourself to create from the place of the sacred. Find the items that speak to you - bring your awareness, intent and prayers to the altar daily; honor and acknowledge the gifts and lessons you receive.

Be open to changing items or even the entire altar as needed. Sense when it is time to close or release the altar, or when it is time to create a new one. As you become comfortable with the creative and elegant way that altars can bring the sacred into your daily life you will find many different uses for honoring and calling in all aspects of your becoming.

Step in, and enjoy!

Warmly,
Linda
